Our impact

Making better choices every day

At Farmhouse, we believe making an impact starts with taking responsibility. As a connecting link between growers, customers and markets, we influence the choices made throughout the supply chain. That is why we look beyond what is needed today and consider the long-term consequences of those choices. We see sustainability as a continuous process of careful consideration, learning, improving and adapting. For us, progress comes from making conscious decisions every day that contribute to quality, reliability and a future-proof fresh produce supply chain.

Responsible sourcing in practice

Our approach starts with one simple principle: Local where possible, global where necessary. For every product, we continuously seek the right balance between quality, availability, reliability and impact. A local product is not automatically the most sustainable choice. Seasonality, yield, water usage, quality and transport efficiency all play a role. That is why we look at the bigger picture for every product and carefully weigh different factors. We also engage with growers and suppliers on topics such as water use, soil quality and biodiversity.

Reducing food waste and preserving value

Reducing food waste is an important focus area throughout our organisation. Fruit and vegetables are delicate products, and not every product immediately finds its intended destination. That does not mean it has lost its value. Together with our partners, we look for alternative applications, for example by processing avocados into guacamole or oil, sweet potatoes into fries, and finding alternative uses for tomatoes. At every stage of the supply chain, we look for opportunities to make the best possible use of products and preserve as much value as possible.

Conscious choices in packaging and logistics

Sustainable choices are not always black and white. That is why we also consider the balance between product protection, shelf life, efficiency and impact when it comes to packaging and logistics. Where possible, we reduce packaging materials. At the same time, packaging can help extend shelf life and contribute to reducing food waste. Within our logistics processes, we continuously look for opportunities to organise transport flows more efficiently.

Making a difference together

Creating impact is not something we do alone. That is why we invest in long-term relationships with growers, customers and other partners, based on trust, transparency and mutual development. Many of these relationships have existed for years, and some have even spanned generations.

Many improvements originate in practice, together with the people who work with our products every day. Our growers know their crops and growing conditions better than anyone. By combining knowledge, experience and market insights, we continuously work on quality, food safety and opportunities to operate smarter, more efficiently and more sustainably.

By being open about challenges, sharing knowledge and working together on improvements, we build a stronger fresh produce supply chain for tomorrow. Some improvements are visible, others are not. It is the combination of all these steps that creates lasting progress.

Connecting Smiles, with tomorrow in mind

We do not have the perfect answer to every challenge. Sustainable choices are not always straightforward and often require careful consideration. What we do have is the conviction that responsible business starts with conscious decisions, transparency about the trade-offs involved, and the determination to keep improving.

For us, real progress is not found in big words, but in the choices we make every day. Together with growers, customers and partners, we are building a strong and future-proof fresh produce supply chain, step by step.
