Eliza and Nikita start their working day at 8.00 am. Eliza, a fourth-year Nutrition and Dietetics student, works four days in the office and one day at home on her dissertation, whilst Nikita, a third-year Business Studies student, has made a conscious choice to be in the office every day: “Marketing is very multifaceted. I learn the most when I’m with my colleagues.” At FV SeleQt, Bram, a student of Entrepreneurship and Retail Management, is already at the office by 7.00 am: “I start my day calmly with a shower, prepare my lunch and then cycle to the station to catch the bus to my work placement, where I have my own space to get on with my work.”
Although their roles are completely different, they all find that no two days are the same. Nikita spends most of her time on content creation, social media, photo shoots and producing promotional material. “One moment I’m recording TikToks, and the next I’m editing photos from a shoot. That variety makes it so much fun!”
Eliza, who works in the QA and sustainability department, manages certificates, schedules pesticide analyses and devises creative ways to raise awareness of sustainability even further in the workplace. “Scheduling the pesticide analyses feels like one big jigsaw puzzle every day. I absolutely love it!”
Bram’s work placement centres on raising awareness of food waste within the company. “My main task is collecting data on waste. I then talk to colleagues on the shop floor to understand their working methods. I then compare these with the figures.” What began as data collection has now developed into a genuine improvement programme. “Together with the team, we visit the warehouse every week. We check the stock and decide together which products we should prioritise for sale to reduce waste. This has a positive impact from both a sustainability and a financial perspective.”
During their work placements, they also familiarised themselves with new systems. Eliza learnt to work with SAP, Agriplace and Sedex. “SAP in particular had quite a steep learning curve, but I received good guidance.” Nikita, on the other hand, immersed herself in the world of design and social media tools: “I was already working with Canva, but here I also learnt to use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Sprout.” Bram also learnt to work with SAP: “It took a bit of getting used to at first, but with the help of training sessions and plenty of practice, I soon got the hang of it.”
At Farmhouse, there are also regular team outings and other fun activities, such as tennis and padel, a pub quiz with the Best Fresh Group and, of course, the Friday afternoon drinks. “You really feel part of the team, and the activities are great fun!” they all say.
What Bram says really makes this work placement unique is the personal attention: “At my other work placement, there was far less focus on me as a student and my learning journey. That’s not the case here: my development is the main priority!” Eliza agrees: “Farmhouse is a dynamic company where, as an intern, you can really make an impact!”
All three also appreciate the scope for taking the initiative. Nikita explains: “Here, you’re not just another intern sitting on the sidelines. You’re given real tasks and responsibility, and your opinion is valued.” Eliza agrees: “You don’t just observe; you’re a fully-fledged member of the team!”
