A mango that still needs a little time to ripen on your fruit bowl? From now on, that’s possible with hard mangoes under the Discovered brand! Naomi, product manager at Yex, enthusiastically shares this new step: “We’ve been importing mangoes for years, but this is the first time we’re offering hard mangoes under our own brand alongside our ready-to-eat ones. We’re quite proud of that!”
Naomi has been working at Yex for three years and is responsible for mango imports. “I’m in daily contact with growers from Brazil, Africa, and the Dominican Republic. They grow the mangoes, which are then shipped by container to Rotterdam. In our warehouse, we process them further depending on what the customer needs: hard mangoes or ready-to-eat ones.”
“It was a deliberate choice to also offer hard mangoes under the Discovered brand,” Naomi explains. “We wanted to make sure it truly added value. Now, supermarket customers can choose: a mango that still needs a few days to ripen, or one that’s ready to enjoy right away – both in the same recognisable blue box.” Quality always comes first. “We only work with partners we know well and who have proven to deliver top quality. That’s how we guarantee the right taste, colour, and shelf life.”
To ensure year-round supply, Yex imports mangoes from various countries. “Each country has its own season and varieties. Brazilian mangoes are often a bit more tangy, while the ‘Kent’ variety tends to be sweeter, regardless of its origin. That knowledge is essential to always provide customers with the best mangoes.”
Importing mangoes doesn’t come without challenges. “The climate plays a major role. Heavy rainfall can affect quality. And sometimes, like during storm Benjamin, there can be delays at sea and in the harbour.” Naomi is proud of how quickly things moved. “We carefully selected the right partner, coordinated the box design, and within just a few weeks, the first container was already at our doorstep. A beautiful blue box full of flavour!”
